HUE, VIETNAM

Huế is a city that symbolizes the strength and imperial majesty of past Vietnamese dynasties. Founded as a royal city in 1687 (the original citadel city of Phu Xuan was built on the same site), Huế is your gateway to the treasures of Vietnam’s royal past. Legacies of the city’s dynastic past are everywhere and keep visitors busy with visits to elaborate tombs and pagodas, mausoleums and assembly halls. Threaded along the beautiful Perfume River which flows through the city, the unique and extraordinary monuments serve as a guide to the lives of Vietnam’s last emperors.

HALF DAY RELIGION & GARDEN HOUSE ( 4 HOURS )

This excursion begins with an interesting boat ride along the Perfume River to the Thien Mu Pagoda. Within its grounds is the Austin car in which Thich
Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk who demonstrated against the South Vietnamese government during the Vietnam War, was driven to Saigon prior to his
widely reported self-immolation in 1963. Transferring to bicycles, cycling affords a great chance to explore the rural countryside surrounding Hue.

Heading along rural lanes, the first destination after leaving Thien Mu Pagoda is Thong market, a local marketplace that sees very few western visitors.

Continue to a nearby village where residents specialise in rice paper making.

It is possible to try your hand at this age-old technique before visiting a traditional garden house on the way back to the city. Hue’s garden houses, known locally as Nha Vuon, are illustrious examples of grand dynasties past. Constructed from old timber and set amidst exquisitely landscaped gardens, this elegant style of house reached its peak in popularity during the reign of the Vietnamese emperors. These days not many such garden houses remain in the city, but this wonderful opportunity yields the chance to visit one of the few that does. Decorative pools, peaceful courtyards and stunning interiors, all designed in accordance with the principles of Feng Shui, are but a few of the delights in store.
