The story of the tunnels begins in the 1940s, during the struggle against French colonialism. Over the next 25 years, as the conflict with the United States intensified, the tunnels were steadily expanded and improved. This underground city, a marvel of engineering, housed meeting rooms, hospitals, storage facilities, and living quarters for the Viet Cong fighters. These tunnels played a pivotal role in their fight for independence, allowing them to control a vital region and launch surprise attacks. At
their peak, the Cu Chi tunnels stretched for over 200 kilometers, connecting Saigon to the Cambodian border.

Preserved as a memorial park, two sections of this remarkable network are open to the public. Visiting the area at Ben Dinh, there is the option to go below the surface and visit sections of the tunnels first hand. The more adventurous may go deeper and your guide will be on hand to give guidance on the degree of expected difficulty.

Keep in mind, there’s plenty to discover above ground as well! We recommend bringing sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and a hat â and be prepared for a bit of dust if you choose to go underground
